Vintage-Inspired Girl's Room

I guess I'm still channeling Rachel Zoe from last Halloween because when I saw this picture I said, "I DIE!" out loud to my screen:

How FUN, right? We don't have a tater tot of our own yet (and this is NOT an announcement) but that doesn't mean I can't love a charming kid's bedroom. The vintage-modern vibe isn't something you see all the time--points for originality--and it's a design that I could see working for a three year old or a 10 year old. Heck, it would even be cute as a nursery if you swapped out the bed for a crib.

You know where I'm going with this. Let's see what we need to get this look for the tiny humans in our lives.

>> We have to start with the wallpaper. As a general rule, I don't even LIKE wallpaper and I think this is cool. I was always that kid who made inanimate objects talk to each other, so I would've had a field day with those birds. It's also a great choice for a feature wall from a design perspective, so let's call that a win-win.

>> Since this is a room that can grow with a kid, I didn't feel bad picking out some nicer furniture. The bed and cute yellow accent chair are from Crate & Barrel. There weren't a lot of bright yellow dressers to be found--which isn't surprising but kind of a bummer anyway--so I chose one from IKEA that can be painted to match. (There's also a larger version if you want more storage.)

>> As for the textiles, the quilt is PERFECT. Not only is it bright and fun (and handmade!), but the modern fabrics put into a vintage pattern encapsulate the whole design concept. Boom! As for the pillows, the yellow one is a nice wink to the dresser and chair, while the green pulls another color out of the quilt.

>> Without the red rug and turquoise shelf this room might feel a little matchy-matchy with all of that yellow. When you have things as colorful as the quilt and wallpaper, you might as well make the space room a rainbow.

Here's a quick budget breakdown:

Wallpaper: $96
Bed: $399
Quilt: $275
Dresser: $80
Chair: $149
Rug: $76
Flower shelf: $22
Green pillow: $10
Yellow pillow: $20

Total: $1,127

You know, the longer I look at this, the more I like it for a grown up, too. Somebody not afraid of color, obviously, but still. I can see it.

Let's play the What's Your Favorite Thing game! For as much as I went on about that wallpaper, I think the quilt takes the prize for me. If nothing else, it would be fun to sit and look at all of the different fabrics in the design. I'm also really into that bed and wonder if they make it in a queen size... Would you do your kid's room like this? How do you feel about the non-traditional theme?

  1. I actually prefer your wallpaper to the original wallpaper, and I love the little blue cabinet in the first photo.

  4. I love a non-traditional look to a kid's room! Who says it has to be some cartoon character! I like your yellowy mustard choice better than the original but love that quilt!

  10. That is so cute! When I was little my room was so important to me. Do you suppose it's the same with kids today? I know I would have loved that room.

  11. Oh what a pretty space!

I actually have a very similar scheme going on in my three year old Charlotte's room! We finally found a quilt with matryoshka print on it...I was obsessing over this theme at the time so it really was a celebration once I found it.

If you ever DO have a tater tot of your own, he or she will be very lucky to have such a design-y mommy :)

  12. Great colors and mix of patterns. And you're right about the room lasting for years as the child grows.
